I feel I am stuck in uncertainty, am I transgender ?

I identify enormously with the experiences and feeling of other transgender people. (the feelings being trapped in the wrong body, etc) But I’m unsure if I AM transgender. Are there any questions I can ask myself that would help me understand myself better? (besides ‘am I transgender?’ and ‘Would I feel happier as a male?’) (I am female bodied) I am sick of being stuck in uncertainty. Help?

Hi Moose,

Thanks for writing to AlterHeros. It seems that you are very concern by your questionning, and you would like to know if you are transgender.

For many people that have made the journey to this transition, it is, a lot of times, a long path. Many important life decisions (type of job, relationships) need a whole lot of questionning and time to think, so imagine a deep question like gender identity ! But, for a start, you can try to project yourself in the future. What would be your «picture perfect» future ?

However, I think that reading and learning about the experiences of transgender people can also be a good start. It will help you understand what they lived. If you can meet people in real, it could be great, as you didn’t write in what city you live, its hard to find any ressource to help you. But if you have a local LGBT center, it might be a good place to start.

And, in life, nothing is always black or white. Some people feel good as «male», other as «female», and other people somewhere in between… and others refuse to identify. Its another thing to think about !

Good luck !

François, for AlterHeros.
